Attractions

  • Historic Bardstown, KY www.bardstowntourism.com
Historic Bardstown, KY began as a stagecoach stop in the late 1700's, with many travelers staying at the Talbott Tavern.  Nearby is St. Joseph's Cathedral, the first Catholic cathedral west of the Alleghenies. The Abbey of Gethsemani, where Thomas Merton lived for many years, lies just south of Bardstown.
The Deatsville Inn is located in Deatsville, about 10 miles northwest of Bardstown. The Deatsville/Samuels area contains many natural springs which produce the pure limestone water needed to make fine bourbon. The area was the original site of the T.W.Samuels Distillery, a predecessor of Maker's Mark
Other famous distilleries based in or near Nelson County are Heaven Hill, Barton Brands, and Jim Beam; many offer tours and other activities.  Nelson County is, in fact, the Bourbon Capital of the World, and every September, Bardstown hosts the week-long Bourbon Festival--an event which is attended by bourbon-lovers from all over the world.

  • Bernheim Forest and Visitor's Center www.bernheim.org
Over 30 miles of hiking trails and woodland roads traverse thousands of acres of varied natural habitats. Lakeside, woodland and ridge top trails offer adventure for the casual walker as well as the experienced hiker. Bernheim is also a sanctuary where a diversity of plants and wildlife can be found. Opened the spring of 2006, the canopy treewalk has become a popular place to spend some time in the treetops overlooking a peaceful valley. The Visitor Center offers an introduction to the history and some of the natural features of Bernheim. Here you can plan your visit to Bernheim and see what programs are coming up. You can also enjoy a snack or something to drink at Isaac's Cafe or buy a plant or something else of interest in the Gift Shop. Explore the displays, then enjoy a leisurely walk along the nearby Cedar Lakes.

  • Kentucky Horse Park www.kyhorsepark.com, the place to get close to the horses. Most places can only tell you about the legends; here one might trot right by you. The Kentucky Horse Park is strictly a hands-on experience. Touch the horses, smell the hay, see the history and majesty of the horses. A place for all your senses.

  • Kentucky Derby Festival www.kdf.org
What the Run for the Roses is to horse racing, the Derby Festival is to community celebrations. The Festival is one of the premiere events of its kind in the world. It brings fun, excitement, international recognition and a spirit that is unmatched anywhere.
